In brief

1 BTC ≈ 840 g of fine gold ≈ 27 troy ounces ≈ one 1 kg bar plus two 100 g bars.
The calculation: Bitcoin price divided by the gold price per gram.
In physical form you get slightly less, because the premium of 2–5% comes off.
The Bitcoin-to-gold ratio compares both stores of value independently of any currency.

The calculation in detail

The conversion needs two numbers: the Bitcoin price and the gold price. Gold is usually quoted per troy ounce — one troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams.

For a purchase of physical metal, the premium is added. At around three percent for one-ounce bars, roughly 815 grams of actual metal remain from those 840. On small units the shortfall is larger, on kilo bars smaller.

What the Bitcoin-to-gold ratio tells you

The ratio states how many troy ounces of gold one Bitcoin is worth. Its value lies in taking currencies out of the picture: whether the euro and the dollar rise together or fall together, the relationship between the two assets stays visible.

A rising ratio means Bitcoin is becoming more expensive relative to gold — regardless of whether that is down to a rising Bitcoin price or a falling gold price. As a valuation yardstick it only goes so far: there is no historical norm from which a “fair” level could be read off.

What this means in practice

Shifting one Bitcoin into metal gets you an amount you have to carry, store and insure: 840 grams is roughly a kilo bar minus a sixth. That is a size for which a bank deposit box or a certified safe makes sense.

In smaller units it gets more expensive: the same quantity in 1-gram bars costs around five percent in premium instead of two — a difference of several hundred euros. If you need divisibility, a CombiBar is the compromise.
